“We are fortunate in the United States to have a stable and a durable democratic government.  But we can't be complacent in assuming this good fortune will continue... It is the citizens of our nation who must preserve our system of government, and we cannot forget that.”

                          ~ Justice Sandra Day O’Connor
                             United States Supreme Court, ret.

Founded by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor following her retirement from the United States Supreme Court, the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute For American democracy, a nonprofit, non-partisan 501(c)(3), continues her distinguished legacy and lifetime work to advance American democracy through multi-generational civil discourse, civic engagement and civics education.

In these challenging times, we face a nation that is sharply divided. Civil discourse has all but vanished, and public trust in the government is at an historic low. Lack of civics knowledge is an existential threat to our democracy and has played a significant part in Americans’ misunderstanding as to our how government functions and their roles as citizens. Civics education – for all generations – is key to restoring a healthy democracy. In an October 2020 survey of 1,000 Americans conducted by the Civic Health Project, both Democrats and Republicans stated that “increasing access to civic education was the number one thing we could do to help heal our country.”

The Institute’s multi-generational “Civics for Life” education programs increase civic learning from middle school students to senior citizens.  Preserving our republic requires educating all Americans on the structure and function of government, and to inspire them to become engaged and informed citizens.
